A strong sewer smell, leaky pipes and a lack of proper labeling earned a Sherman Mexican restaurant the lowest rating in recent inspections by the Grayson County Health Department.

The Camino Viejo restaurant, 110 E. Houston, in Sherman, earned the only “C” grade in the latest round of inspections.

Restaurants receive an “A”, “B”, “C” or “F” rating. An “A” means remediation officials reported no violations or only a few minor violations. Those with a “B” were found to have several minor violations but nothing major. Restaurants with a “C” may have a major infraction or repeat offenses, but in the opinion of inspectors, nothing serious enough to warrant an “F.”

An “A” means sanitation technicians reported 10 or fewer demerits. Those with a “B” received 11 to 20 demerit points. Restaurants with a “C” had between 21 and 30 demerit points and restaurants with an “F” received more than 30 demerit points.

The Camino Viejo inspection report indicates that the inspection was carried out on June 21. The inspector deducted points because the whole establishment smelled of sewer gas and indicated that the establishment should seek the help of a plumber for this problem.

Also, apparently there were leaky pipes in the kitchen. It also listed several containers of beans and rice that had been cooked overnight and had not been properly cooled to the correct holding temperature for maximum safety.

The report says a food handler was seen handling dirty dishes and then handling clean dishes without washing his hands in between.
