Popular halal Mexican food truck opens restaurant in San Jose tomorrow

Halal-raised street tacos sprinkled with cloves and stuffed with cumin-marinated meats are about to become a staple in San Jose.

After a successful run as one of the only places for chef-led halal Mexican cuisine, El Halal Amigos food truck is opening a permanent brick-and-mortar location at 1100 Lincoln Ave., #160, in the Willow Glen neighborhood . The official opening of the restaurant is scheduled for Saturday noon. The first 100 guests will receive a free agua fresca with their order.

Chef-owner Hisham Abdelfattah, a native of South Bay who is Filipino-Palestinian, founded El Halal Amigos in 2020 as a food truck in Fremont and quickly attracted an audience for his 100% halal menu featuring street tacos, burritos and plates with barbacoa brisket, chicken al pastor, carne asada and vegan potato and cauliflower. Shares include spicy queso and fries, and churros served with chocolate and vanilla ice cream from Marianne.

Abdelfattah uses local ingredients in a full kitchen, where salsas and his fan-favorite NAR sauce are made in-house daily. His cooking is inspired by an appreciation of Mexican cuisine and travels around the country as well as his own cultural upbringing. You’ll notice the subtle Arabic influence in the spices he uses, including cumin and cinnamon.

El Halal Amigos opening hours are 11:30am-9pm Monday-Thursday and until 10pm Friday-Saturday. The food truck is located at 4050 Alder Ave., Fremont Tuesday through Saturday 4-9 p.m. For more information visit www.elhalalamigos.com.
