New family-run Mexican restaurant rocks Benton Township for birria

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WNDU) — From tacos to burritos to their signature quesabirria, Benton Township’s new Mexican restaurant, Sabroso!, already has Michiana coming back for more.

“I feel like I’m dreaming. I feel like it’s not real,” says Sabroso! owner Olivia Mancinas Benitez.

“A guy came up to me and asked me who made the burrito? I was like me. And he punched it. He was like, yeah, that stuff was a bomb,” Christian Benitez says, the son of Olivia, co-owner of Sabroso!.

In just 10 days, manager Johnathan De Toro, says most queues during the lunch rush last all the way to the door.

“One of our main dishes is our quesabirria. Everyone likes it. They love birria. It’s our number one seller right now,” says De Toro.

Olivia says the idea of opening a restaurant came from a dream she and her husband, Juan, had in Mexico. After moving to Michiana in 2005, Olivia says she and Juan spent the next 17 years working in the restaurant industry.

“When we arrived in 2005, I never thought we would be here,” says Olivia. “I used to see the sign over there, Mancinos, and that’s my last name, and I’d joke, ‘Oh, that’s my restaurant.’ And now it’s my restaurant.

For Olivia, it’s a dream come true, but as she explains, a dream that wouldn’t have been possible without the help of her eldest son, Luis Benitez.

“I am a nurse. I work 6-7 days a week to be able to get the income needed to start up, and until today I still work 6-7 days because we did not want to take loans. I have so paid for everything out of my own pocket (to run the restaurant),” says Luis.

Going forward, Olivia says she has her sights set on not only serving her customers with the best service, but also the best birria in town.

“I want to give customers the best, the best service, the best food, the best quality,” Olivia said.

Sabroso! is located at 1619 Mall Drive, Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Sabroso! is open Sunday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Saturday. To see their menu, click here.
