Margarita’s Kitchen and Cantina is a San Diego restaurant located in the beautiful Seaport Village in downtown San Diego. They specialize in fresh margaritas and authentic Mexican cuisine from Oaxaca and Michoacan. They started as a small Mexican restaurant and have since grown into an award-winning dining spot in the city of San Diego. All their dishes are cooked with fresh and local products. The vibe here is very lively and energetic and there’s plenty of outdoor seating as well as other restaurants and dessert shops nearby. The restaurant is right next to the ocean so there is a nice view of the ocean with live music, sights and shopping.
For our meal we tried their taco al pastor, super nachos, carne asada chimichanga and their corn elote. All in all, all good was great, very fresh and certainly very fulfilling and robust. We also tried their frozen margaritas, of course, because that’s what they’re known for! For this meal, we tried their frozen lime margarita, but they also have a strawberry flavor.
First, their taco al pastor is made with delicious meat al pastor (plenty of it) which tastes very fresh and flavorful in a soft shell tortilla and diced onions and grated parsley. Overall I would say they were very meaty and flavorful and the onion and parsley were a great addition. However, I thought the tortilla was a bit thick and drier, so it was rather heavy to eat. I think it would have been nice if there was something to dip, however, I understand that now all tacos come with a dip.
We then tried their awesome nachos loaded with melted queso cheese, fresh tomato salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Their guacamole is homemade with fresh, local ingredients so you know you’re getting those good things instead of guacamole from the fridge in a tub. I really enjoyed these, there was a lot of cheese for each tortilla chip which is a major deciding factor for nachos for me. I could use more guacamole, though, but I always want more guacamole if possible because I’m obsessed with avocado. I loved the fresh tomato salsa and the sour cream is a classic. They also put jalapenos on the side without you having to ask which is awesome, and their jalapenos are super crispy and fresh, definitely a nice addition to the dish.
Next up is their carne asada chimichanga which basically looks like a really meaty burrito covered in sauce and cheese. I thought the flavors were quite delicious and very well blended. However, I thought it was a little too much meat for me, there was literally nothing but meat, sauce, cheese and tortilla. But I should have known what to expect when I ordered it so that was on me, but for those who like chimichangas, like my friend, it was really good. My friend really enjoyed it so I would recommend it if you really like meat and robust food.
Last but not least, we tried their corn elote. This was my first time trying elote, so I’m not sure if all elote are supposed to taste the same. But this elote was a little sour and a little savory. Thought it was quite nice and I love corn so enjoyed it. It was a bit too sour for my personal taste, and it was also a bit spicy, but still very doable. I think it’s a great refreshing side dish to go with your Mexican meal and it’s also a great appetizer or snack to eat when strolling along the ocean or shopping in Seaport Village .
As for the drinks, we ordered their frozen lime margarita, which was quite nice and very refreshing and lemony. I personally really enjoyed it and since it was frozen it was especially refreshing to drink it while walking or with your meal as Mexican food can sometimes be a bit heavy. I liked that it was quite acidic, but the acid was balanced with a nice sweetness, so it wasn’t extremely acidic like some lemonades can sometimes be.
All in all, it was a very satisfying meal with a great variety. They have a very extensive menu that can satisfy all your cravings. They also have a wide variety of different meats to choose from. I really recommend this place for a date or for a group of friends. Not only is there great food all around and nearby, but there is also plenty of entertainment and places to hang out before or after your meal. Next time I will definitely try their fish tacos, can’t believe I missed them this time!
