Ellsworth Burger King becomes a Mexican restaurant

If you had any hopes for a Whopper’s return to Ellsworth, I hate to crush your dreams. But the good news is that the long-vacant former Burger King restaurant will be reborn as a Mexican restaurant, according to city officials.

If you have walked past the restaurant on the High Street you may have noticed that construction is going on. According to Lori Roberts of the Ellsworth Code Enforcement Office, the Mexican restaurant is expected to open around June 1.

There is still work to be done, in that they will need to obtain state and municipal licenses, including building (modification) permits, and sign licenses and liquor permits. The Code Office must approve the number of seats in the restaurant to ensure that there are sufficient parking spaces. Owners will also need to apply to the state for liquor licenses.

The Ellsworth Burger King, owned by Steve Wegner, was one of four Burger Kings that closed permanently after service on Monday, December 28, 2020. In addition to the Ellsworth Burger King, the Hogan Road Bangor, Orono and Rockland Burger Kings have been closed.
