Juan Sebastien Calle and Adam Berlinthe team behind Buena Vida Tapas & Sol on Atlanta’s BeltLine, will open a new concept called Chicheria MX Kitchen. It is expected to open in mid-2023 as part of the 80-acre adaptive reuse development on Atlanta’s Upper Westside, according to an announcement.

Berlin, in a phone interview Thursday, said the new restaurant would be located near the Fox Bros. Bar-BQ at The Works. The project will require approximately 4,000 square feet.

“We love what developer Selig has done bringing a really good mix of [tenants]”, Berlin said. “We know the Westside is going to continue to grow… It’s going to be huge going forward.”

Calle and Berlin have recruited a former “Top Chef” Whitney Otawka to be consulted on the concept map. A highlight of the menu is the handmade organic blue corn tortillas.

“We’re really excited to be working with Chef Whitney Otawka,” Berlin said. “When she was in Athens at her restaurant Cinco y Diez, she did amazing stuff with modern Oaxaca, and she’s also from San Diego… She traveled all over Mexico doing research.”

In a press release, Calle said the concept will be unlike any other Mexican restaurant, “with authentic, satisfying, health-conscious dishes like our handmade blue corn tortillas and the best fish taco Baja de la ville”.

The restaurant’s main dining room and bar will mimic the tones and textures traditionally found in the Mexican peninsula, according to the announcement. The restaurant will feature an expansive covered patio overlooking The Spur and a take-out window with an abbreviated food and drink menu.

Customers will also be able to watch the blue corn tortillas being made.

Chicheria joins over 25 tenants in the first phase of The Works, which spans 27 acres. This includes the Chattahoochee Food Works food hall and Dr. Scofflaw’s Brewery, among others.

Other upcoming openings include Your 3rd Spot, Fetch Dog Park, BRASH Coffee Roasters and a new concept from Dave Green of The Select.
