A new hacienda-style Mexican restaurant and bar will open in Lone Star from celebrity San Antonio chef Johnny Hernandez


San Antonio celebrity chef Johnny Hernandez is about two months away from launching his latest restaurant and bar, and the new project will be a real homecoming for him.

Hernandez plans to open Casa Hernán in the Lone Star neighborhood behind Blue Star at 411 E. Cevallos St. in a two-story house that served as a private residence for eight years. He lived on the top floor and opened the ground floor as an event space, which was also called Casa Hernán. Hernandez has been renovating the space for months with new lighting, furniture, and decor.

“I want the space to feel like a hacienda,” Hernandez said. “I want it to be festive and to be a festive style of food.”

Hernandez has yet to refine the menu or cocktail program for the new project, but he said he will stay true to the regional Mexican culinary traditions he is known for at his other properties, including La Gloria, The Frutería-Botanero and Burgerteca, without overlapping. these concepts.

“It will be a unique dining experience in Southtown,” he said. “I try to stay cautiously away from Frutería and Burgerteca. Customers can expect something very different from anything we do.

Initially, Hernandez plans to use only Casa Hernán’s sprawling 5,000 square foot ground floor, which will feature plenty of indoor and outdoor seating areas. He plans to open the second floor, which includes two balconies with stunning city views, in the future.

Hernandez hosts a preview of the redesigned space on February 22 to mark National Margarita Day. While he won’t be making his food or drink debut at Casa Hernán at the event, he will be serving La Gloria’s margaritas and appetizers from his food truck. Hernandez said reservations will be required and he will post instructions on how to make them on Casa Hernán’s Instagram page at @casahernan_southtown in the coming days.
